Steps Involved In Making Braided Rugs

Making handmade braided rugs can create a very rustic look in any room. Braided rugs are quite durable and are more authentic compared to handmade wool rugs which tend to wear out if placed on high traffic area. Some of the things you will need to make country braided rugs are a long needle that has a large hole, fabric remnants such as sheets, old clothing, towels, rags, etc, scissors, heavy sewing thread, a wooden clamp-type clothespins, and a crafting board or any portable flat object.

  1. Cut the materials and fabrics into long strips of 2-3 inches wide. You can use whatever type of material you like but ensure it is a durable one such as heavy cotton or denim
  2. Select the three base fabric strips that you want to start with. You shouldn’t knot or sew them together as it will leave a lump in the finished braided rug. Take your crafting board on your lap and secure the strips together using a clothespin. Repeat this step until you make 10 sets of strips
  3. Braid a set of 3 strips together, starting by crossing the strip on the left over the centre strip and then the one on the right over the newly formed center strip. Continue until you complete the braid.
  4. To add piece to the end of your first braid, you simply lay the top part of a different set of strips to the sprawling ends of the braid. Hold all new strips at a 90-degree angle and joining them to each other. This forms a well-finished square corner, which you should then simply stitch by hand and trim the excesses away at close juncture. Repeat and join the remaining two strips with the new ones. This helps prevent bulky or weak joining seams in your finished braidedrug. Repeat this step until you braid all sets of strips together and you will end up with a 1-2 inches rag braid.
  5. Create a spiral using the braid, beginning from one end and working with just a tiny section at a time. Lay the braid on a flat surface and start winding the braid on itself. Using your needle and thread, hand stitch all spiraling rows of tress to each other to add durability and strength to your finished braided rug. Repeat this process until the is the size that you want.

Next, show off your newly created braided area rug to your friends and family! The more you practice the better you will get at it, so remember practice makes perfect.
